Description
The palisade at the left consists of real wood posts that lead to a blockhouse, outside the frame on the left. The gate, the guard, the palisade, and the dog on the right are part of a mural on the wall of a shop in Astoria. Fort Astoria was founded by John Jacob Astor's Pacific Fur Company five years after Lewis and Clark left. After the War of 1812, the fort was transferred to the British-owned North West Company, later Hudson's Bay Company as Fort George.
