Description
Fishing platforms line are suspended from both sides of the Cascade Locks. The platforms are used by local Native American dip net and cast net fishers, and are accessible only by wooden ladders. Net fishing for spawning salmon was common by tribes along the Columbia River at rapids and waterfalls, but many of the historic fishing sites were covered by rising waters behind the hydroelectric dams. The tradition is continued in this modified fashion at Cascade Locks.
