Description
This acequia or irrigation ditch runs along the northeast edge of the Santuario de Chimayo. Juniper and pinon speckled hills rise behind it. Seven stone arches, each framing a stone cross more than six feet tall, stand on the right. The Santuario is visited by Catholic pilgrims especially on Good Friday, and by by tourists and other visitors of all faiths throughout the year. The acequia is running high from spring runoff in the Sangre de Cristo mountains in late March. The Santuario, Sanctuary, is a place of rest, restoration and renewal for the faithful, a place of peace for all.
