Description
On March 22, 2014, a terrible landslide that carried tons of mud, rocks, trees, and other debris sheared off a mountain slope four miles east of the small community of Oso, Washington. The slide crushed over 40 buildings, blocked the North Fork of the Stillaguamish River causing severe flooding, and, most tragically, ended the lives of 43 people who lived or worked or were simply passing through the rural area below the slide. Forty-three cedar trees were planted next to SR 530 as a memorial to those lost lives. Each tree has a small wooden heart at its base with the name of the person honored by that tree. Other mementos have been added to each tree by family and friends. March, 2020.
