Description
La Iglesia de la Santa Cruz de la Canada (the Church of the Holy Cross of the Arroyo or Creek) is five miles east of Espanola at McCurdy Road and Santa Cruz Road. A small chapel was built here in 1600 by settlers accompanying Don Juan de Onate. That chapel was destroyed by flooding in 1732, and construction on the main part of this solid adobe church was completed in 1748. The Penitentes worshiped here until building their own chapel.
